Outer Terror Review - An Arcade Bullet Hell Adventure Inspired by Popular Culture Comic Books

Add OUTER TERROR to your list of must-have pixel games if you want something that might make you think of slasher and shoot-'em-up movies from the 1980s and 1990s. VoxPop Games recently made the game, which was created by Salt & Pixel LLC.

Outer Terror is a stylish and spooky homage to pulp horror. With hordes of otherworldly creatures ready to attack, it’s up to players to do whatever they can to survive. From a vampiric zombie polar bear to a pack of sentient toasters, each scenario is packed with action-packed gore and thrills.

Before we deep dive into the Outer Terror, I want to remind you that you can find a lot of content related to VoxPop Games and the early development stages of Outer Terror on Lawod. You can also check our interview over Outer Terror with the developer Salt & Pixel. Anyway! Let’s keep our intro short and pass the review of VoxPop’s latest release, Outer Terror.

Developed by Salt & Pixel and published by VoxPop GamesOuter Terror offers a unique experience for players. The game offers a blend of arcade bullet hell with rogue-lite elements and features stunning graphics to bring the game’s universe to life.

You will take on hordes of pixelated monsters on five massive maps while leveling up your characters. The game includes ten unique survivors that offer a variety of starting weapons and abilities. Each character has a unique look and skill. I must say that every character in this game looks incredibly cool, and they make you feel like they have a soul.

You can assemble a ridiculous arsenal of weapons and blast away endless waves of otherworldly cosmic creatures in stylish rogue-lite worlds that pay homage to B-movies and classic comic books.

Each chapter tells its own story and offers a fresh take on popular pop culture media. For example, a snowy zombie level references old slasher movies and maps that appeal to younger audiences with humor based on internet creepypasta.

You’ll try to defend a small town from a cosmic entity devouring the moon in The Gray Death, hunt vampires in the tundra of FrostBite, fight possessed toasters and refrigerators in Kill Switch, save the soul of your sister in Otherside, or battle the dreaded SCP Foundation in Incident Report.

The Visuals Immerse You In Your Favorite Comic Book

The game’s visuals are immersive and impressive, with a haunting soundtrack that enhances the atmosphere of each world. The character animations and sound effects are also excellent, completing the immersion.

When you play the game, it’s like stepping into the shoes of the hero in your favorite comic book. You’ll get the feeling that you’re right there on the pages yourself, fighting against enemies and getting wrapped up in a thrilling adventure.

Although Outer Terror offers great visuals when the action begins, the UI can be a bit confusing, as you must select a character and go through a cinematic intro every time they load up a new game. In addition, the camera is fixed to the center of the screen, so moving around can be difficult. But these opinions are mine, of course. So, you may feel completely different.

There Are 10 Unique Characters, But The Goal is the Same

Outer Terror features 10 playable characters with unique weapons and abilities to fight off endless hordes of otherworldly creatures in each level.

Even though each character in the game has their own unique set of skills and weapons, their goal is the same: to help and protect the survivors of cities that are being attacked by swarms of enemies. They may be just a character in a comic book, but they sure do love to shoot those bullets!

Pros and Cons of Outer Terror

Outer Terror is a frantic bullet hell casual game whose core gameplay is a real blast to play. The roguelike elements help keep things fresh with weapons, maps, and enemy paths. It is also great to be able to play the game in a split-screen co-op mode.

Each chapter of Outer Terror offers a different scenario and tells different stories, but all of them deliver a gripping narrative.

The game features a cast of 10 survivors reminiscent of pulp horror movie characters. Having 10 characters in this scale of games is awesome.

Also, each character has unique weapons and skills to master, and they are upgradeable.

While Outer Terror does have some strong points that represent the best of the retro roguelike genre, there are a few areas where it falls a bit short. Specifically, the gameplay can become repetitive, and the upgrade system could use some improvement. But all these are my opinion; obviously, you may think way different from me.

Final Thoughts on Outer Terror

If you’re a gamer, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your gameplay experience. One way to do this is by really immersing yourself in the game’s soundtrack and audio effects. And, to help you stay alive longer, be sure to collect any equipment or health packs you come across while playing.

Outer Terror also offers an exceptional gaming experience with a diverse range of characters to choose from, each with their own distinct weapons and abilities. As you progress through the game, you have the opportunity to improve your attributes and acquire new skills. Despite the potential for challenges, the game is incredibly enjoyable.

Add Outer Terror to your game library if you’re interested in slasher and shoot-’em-up games that are inspired by the 1980s and 1990s horror movies. You can grab it on Steam or the Epic Games Store for just $9.99.
