Why Are PlayStation-Exclusive Games Coming to PC One By One?

An era ends after the release of Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War for PCs. This era is called “Exclusive Games.” When we say “exclusive” for a game, it means it was available only on the platform it was released on. But this sales strategy is changing. In this article, we will seek an answer to the question of why PlayStation-exclusive games are coming to PCs one by one.

As you may have noticed, PlayStation-exclusive games have started to be released for PCs with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn. Days Gone and the legendary PlayStation game God of War followed this trend and were released for PCs. Following the announcement of PC versions of Spider-Man Remastered and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the company announced that Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will also be released for PCs. On June 9, 2022, PlayStation made an announcement about the PC release of another PlayStation-exclusive title, The Last of Us. But the question is, why does PlayStation release its exclusive games for PCs?

The Term “Exclusive Game” Evolved

First of all, companies used to use the term “exclusive” to refer to the platform. For example, God of War. It was a PlayStation exclusive when it was initially released. You were not able to play it on another platform, such as PCs or Xbox consoles.

But these days, the term “exclusive” has evolved to “console exclusive.” So, if a game is released exclusively for Xbox, this means that it will be available on Xbox consoles. For instance, Starfield will be an Xbox-exclusive game, but it will also be available on PCs. Therefore, companies like PlayStation and Xbox don’t see the PC platform as a competitor, and this situation benefits PC gamers.

PlayStation Wants to Reach More Gamers

Secondly, PlayStation wants to reach more gamers. When we look at the number of gamers, which is estimated at about 1.5 billion, in the world, we can see that a few of them are PlayStation owners. According to the sales numbers, only 150 million people are playing their games on PlayStation. This might be the second reason why PlayStation-exclusive games are coming to PCs, one by one.

PlayStation Wants to Increase Sales of PlayStation-Exclusive Games

The third reason behind the release of PlayStation-exclusive games on PC is the increasing sales numbers of these games. After their PC release, Horizon Zero Dawn sold over 2 million copies, Days Gone sold over 800,000 copies, and God of War sold nearly 1 million copies. When you add the sales numbers of upcoming PlayStation-exclusive games on PC, we may see that PlayStation will make a huge profit.

According to a report published by Sony in the past few months, we can say that by 2025, Sony will increase its breakthroughs on the PC side. It is safe to say that PlayStation games will appear more frequently on the PC and mobile platforms.
